A few weeks back The Washington Post kindly included me in a great and informative article on stylish house numbers. A recommended the Chatham sign shop as a quick and stylish resource for “digitalizing” your abode. But if you’re feeling more creative here’s a few more ideas I’ve used for in the past If you’re handy with a paint brush don’t be afraid to make your own house number sign. I did this one 16 years ago and included the house name on it

This is especially effective for a farm or ranch house as well. It has a charming look and comes off less commercial looking than a mail order style.

This antique iron fire back makes the perfect outdoor plaque for painting or stenciling in your house number. I used this one for denoting the year my cottage was built. It’s fun to take one of these salvaged pieces and make it into something useful.
